The Gendarm Garden in Padborg
The playfull sculpture The art of hiding – and getting found
In 2004, sculptor Jørgen Glud (1942-2003) created a play sculpture for Gendarmhaven. It is easy to see that Jørgen Glud works for and with children in his artistic work. The art of hiding – to be seen is a utility and play sculpture that makes itself available to and challenges children's imagination. Here you can climb, crawl and hide.
The sculpture's playful and life-affirming expression contrasts with the seriousness that also rests over the place. Because it is also a place of remembrance. It was here that three Danish gendarmes were killed by plainclothes German vanguards on 9 April 1940, to which the memorial stone in Gendarmhaven has been erected. When darkness falls and the lighting is switched on, the sculpture changes character from the playful to the monumental.
The Gendram Garden
In 2001, it was decided to build the Gendarmhaven as an urban garden that functions as a gathering place in Padborg.
The garden was created as part of the urban renewal that turned Nørregade into a green boulevard with space for all road users.
