The Rilway Passage Between the train stations in Aabenraa

You can still see one of the two station buildings that the passage leads between, while the Kreisbahnhof was demolished in 1963.

Aabenraa Railway Station in Jernbanegade was designed in 1867 by architect N.P.C. Holsøe, who was responsible for the construction of the majority of the station buildings associated with the South Jutland Main Line, which ran from Vamdrup to Flensburg. The South Jutland Main Line was built between 1864 and 1866.

Cultural-historical value

The building is associated with the historicist, Nordic-Italian inspired round-arched style in smooth brick and a low-pitched slate roof.

The style is typical of the time and inspired by the architect N.P.C. Holsøe's master, J.D. Herholdt.

This can be seen in the round-arched, paired windows, the use of molded bricks, the frieze on the facade, and the characteristic console-supported block tooth cornice.

In terms of decoration, much attention has been given to the detailed facade, while the platform side appears much more anonymous.
